Homemade Deep Fried Hush Puppies

Southern fried fish has no better deep-fried companion than these scrumptious homemade hush puppies. This recipe is simple and easy to follow. Hush Puppies pair well with many different dishes such as fish tacos, fish cakes, even simple pan-fried or oven baked fish dishes. If you are cooking for company, you may want to print this out for them, because they will most definitely want your recipe after tasting these delicious homemade hush puppies.


1.5 Cups White Cornmeal Mix (Self-rising)
3/4 Cup Flour (Self-rising)
1.5 Tbsp of Sugar
3/4 Cup Diced Sweet Onion
Vegetable Oil
1 Lightly Beaten Large Egg
1.25 Cups Buttermilk


Prep: 25 min
Cook: 20 min
Yields: 24 Hush Puppies
Pour about 3 inches worth of the oil into the bottom of a dutch oven or a deep cooking pot. Head the oil to about 375 degrees.
Preheat the oven to 200 degrees and line a sheet pan with aluminum foil and set aside.
In a medium sized bowl combine the cornmeal, flour, sugar and diced onion.
Now add the beaten egg and buttermilk to the bowl. Stir the mixture, just until the dry ingredients have been moistened all the way through. Let the mixture sit for 10 min.
Using a large tablespoon begin dropping rounded spoonfulls of the batter into the hot oil. Be careful to not splash yourself.
Repeat the above step in 3 different batches, being sure to cook each side of the hush puppies for about 2-3 minutes. After each batch, to keep them warm, place them on the aluminum foil lined tray in the pre-heated oven.
